With a diminishing number of novel pharmaceutical interventions passing trials and coming to market, people are beginning to “think outside the box” and are researching emerging biotechniques. Some of these “new” procedures have actually been under their noses for years. Whole Human Gut Microbiome Transplants – now popularly called Faecal Microbiota Transplants, are completely logical to a Food Microbiologist. It is normalising the gut in a way that cannot be achieved by any other pharmacological intervention.

There are two areas where Faecal Microbiota Transplants may be of interest:

Recurrent Clostridium difficile infection

Non-responsive or managed-gastrointestinal or neurological conditions

About Our Work

Taymount Clinic was founded in 2003 initially as a small private digestive health clinic in Hertfordshire where the focus was on gut flora dysbiosis. It became obvious that during extensive gut profile testing, commercial probiotics can fulfil useful roles in the human gut in competing with pathogenic species and providing DNA material to commensal bacteria, but they held a very poor record of colonisation in the human gut once the supplementation ceased. In a search for bacterial species and strains that demonstrated a proven and capable ability to colonise, it became clear that the commensal bacteria that made up the human gut microbiome already fulfilled that role admirably.

After an intensive period of academic research and laboratory experimentation in the concept of the harvesting, handling, refining and storing of the whole human microbiome, and then implanting into the human gut, it was assessed whether any side effects were experienced.  Then tests were carried out to assess the changes of the gut microbiota.

Once reasonably satisfied that the bio-logic of the process indicated that if all safety protocols of cross infection by pathogen or parasite were observed, it became clear that a “universal standardised implant” system could be developed.

We started our first FMT treatments in 2009 on a very small scale, monitoring the results and perfecting the methodology all the while.  Today, after over 10,000 treatments, we are still continually improving and changing the procedures and methods of treatment as we discover important new aspects of the microbiome every day.

We believe that as a result of many years’ research, study and continual refinement, we have developed a processing and administering protocol which is highly effective yet without being invasive or uncomfortable.  As the research progresses, we are beginning to see exciting connections between the microflora and the immune system, which in our view is clearly highlighting the need for the medical and microbiological communities to join forces and concentrate more efforts into understanding the unique relationship between bacteria and the human immune system.

We believe we are developing the highest safety standards and processing procedures, which will set the standard for other clinics to replicate. We have worked with insurance companies to assure them of our safety and secured policies for FMT treatment and product insurance, so we feel that we are the most experienced FMT clinic, as well as the first.

Our implants are quarantined for at least 3 months in ultra deep-freeze to make sure the donors clear two tests, three months apart to ensure nothing is incubating that may later appear. We believe that we are the only suppliers of FMT who do this.

We have helped the Clinical Coding Group to identify and classify FMT and produce the treatment code for it, and as pioneers, we believe our screening, quarantine and processing are the first and the best for quality and patient safety.

Our new clinic in Hertfordshire offers a supremely relaxing and pleasant experience for the patient from the moment they step into the building until they leave two weeks later with information and helpful advice as well as their new microbiome.  Patient safety and care is of upmost importance.
