Pioneers in digestive health

In 2003 we established the Taymount Clinic in the UK, and in 2011 it became the first specialised Gut Flora Transplant (FMT) clinic in the world.

Today, over 2500 clients have completed a FMT Programme in the UK and our Partner Clinics are improving access to Gut Flora Transplants worldwide.

Through microbiome lab testing we are opening up new ways for people to understand, monitor their digestive health.

Our mission: Leading the microbiome revolution

We are passionate about helping people to understand their digestive health. Our (optional) microbiome test offers in-depth analysis of gut health. If clinical testing highlights poor diversity, we offer Gut Flora Transplants (FMT).

For people.

We want to bring (micro) Biology back into medicine. Research is increasingly revealing fascinating information between the gut microbiome and the immune system. We believe this is the start of a microbiome revolution: a new frontier for medicine.

Our story

2003

The beginning

Taymount Clinic (UK) opens its doors, initially providing colonic lavage procedures, combined with complex probiotic blends.

2009

Microbiology meets digestive health.

Gut profiling shows probiotics fail to colonise the human gut. Our Co-founders, Glenn Taylor and Dr. Enid Taylor seek new ways to improve client outcomes.

2010

A lightbulb moment.

A client enquiry about Gut Flora Transplants (FMT) prompts us to ask: why use synthetic probiotics to improve gut flora, when human microbial cells are present in stools?

2010

To the lab.

Through research we refine a process for extracting the whole microbiome from stools. Our Co-founders test their theory; by doing ‘a Barry Marshall*’ – self-implanting microbial cells to check for side-effects and monitor changes in their microbiome. We set our goal: to open the world’s first specialist FMT clinic.

2011

A safe Gut Flora implant.

Our standardised implant system produces safe FMT implants in-line with the screening, harvesting, processing, storage and delivery protocols defined in the Taymount FMT Standard.

2012

Clinical practice.

We begin offering Gut Flora Transplants (FMT) to clients on a small scale, carefully monitoring results and perfecting our methodology.

2014

Inspiration.

We visit Professor Thomas Barody, an FMT pioneer, who leads the Centre for Digestive Diseases in Australia. Inspired, we continue to refine our process and safety standards, striving to set the minimum safety precautions that should be in place.

2015

Going global.

Our first Taymount Partner Clinic opens, allowing more people to access our FMT Programmes.

2018

Microbiome laboratory testing launches.

We introduce microbiome lab testing an analysis service with specialist support, for anyone interested in understanding their digestive health.

*What is a ‘Barry Marshall’?

Nobel Prize-winning Australian Gastroenterologist Dr Barry Marshall famously infected himself with Helicobacter pylori bacteria to prove his theory that H.pylori infection resulted in gastritis and led to gastric ulcers.

Taymount FMT Standard

The Taymount GFT Standard places safety, quality and care at the heart of everything we do.

We quarantine for safety

Our strict donor selection, screening and quarantine procedures protect patient safety.

  • We select – We only select donors with a healthy microbiome. Every donor receives dietary and lifestyle advice to optimise their gut health.
  • We screen – Our donors undertake regular screening. We test donated stools every month to ensure microbial quality. Every three months, we run blood tests to screen for a wide range of diseases including HIV and Hepatitis.
  • We quarantine – We never use fresh material. We quarantine all donated material at -80°C in our laboratory for at least 12 weeks to ensure no latent disease is present.
  • We release – We release donated material for GFT (FMT) only when screening proves the quarantine period has been successfully cleared.
We only transplant microbial cells

We never use the whole stool. In the lab we extract gut flora (microbial cells) from donated stools to create GFT (FMT) implants.

By removing food, mucus, biliary waste, skin cells, blood cell debris, hormones and other toxins from donor material we avoid potential side effects.

For example, a woman with naturally high testosterone levels will not receive additional male hormones via our Gut Flora Transplants (FMT), and therefore avoids the risk of hormonal in-balance.

The UK Human Tissue Authority (HTA) has excluded our GFT (FMT) implants from HTA regulation because our process leaves it highly unlikely that any intact host human cells remain in the extracted microbial implant.

We use 10 different donors per program

A diverse microbiome is key to a healthy gut and strong immune system. Each Taymount donor provides, on average, over 1000 different types of microbial cell.

Our 10 day GFT (FMT) Programme uses implants from 10 different donors to maximise the diversity of gut flora a client receives.

We store safety aliquots for a minimum of two years

We take an aliquot (safety sample) from every GFT (FMT) implant we create and store it at -80°c for a minimum of two years, to allow for any subsequent audit testing

We track GFT (FMT) implants worldwide

Every single one of our implants (used in the UK or anywhere in the world), can be traced to its donor source. Our international tracking system provides peace of mind for us, and for clients.

We ultra deep freeze to be safe, responsive and accessible

Evidence shows frozen GFT (FMT) implants are just as effective as fresh material (C. difficile studies 2014, 2016, 2017).

Freezing our GFT (FMT) implants at -80°c allows us to be:

  • Safe – Freezing allows us to enforce our quarantine period. We only release GFT (FMT) implants when donor screening proves the quarantine has been successfully cleared.
  • Responsive – Banking frozen implants allows us to respond quickly to meet patient need. For example, past clients can request top-up implants from any Taymount Clinic.
  • Accessible – We supply frozen implants worldwide in cryo-protective packaging to Taymount Partner Clinics to improve access to safe, high-quality gut flora.
We protect quality at every stage

Delivering safe, high-quality gut flora shapes each stage of our process.

  • We select – We only select donors with a healthy microbiome and coach them on dietary and lifestyle choices to optimise their gut health. Monthly stool testing for donors ensures ongoing microbial quality.
  • We extract – We extract only the gut flora (the microbiome) from the rest of the stool. We believe this offers a safer, higher quality solution.
  • We protect – Obligate anaerobes (microbial cells that cannot survive oxygen exposure) make up to 95% of the microbiome. We protect these microbial cells from oxygen at each stage, from donation to processing, storage and delivery to retain the entire microbiome for transplantation.
We consider you, the whole person

Our clients benefit from holistic advice, designed to help them gain long-term control of their digestive health.

Our team of clinicians includes FMT Practitioners, Nutritional Therapists and Naturopaths, who provide guidance on nutrition, lifestyle choices, stress relief and life-coaching as an integral part of our approach to Gut Flora Transplantation – GFT (FMT).

We also involve Holistic Dentists, who bring expertise in the connection between dental health and gut flora, which is key to helping us to work towards optimum outcomes.
